Postural Restoration
Your posture is a symptom.
We treat the cause.
If you've been told you have bad posture and given stretches that never seem to fix it, there's a reason. Posture is usually a symptom of deeper patterns: the way you breathe, the muscle imbalances built around an old injury, the compensation strategies your body adopted over time. Postural Restoration is evidence-based, non-drug care that addresses the underlying system rather than the surface.

The body is naturally asymmetrical. When that asymmetry becomes a pattern, it becomes pain.
Postural Restoration is a methodology developed by Ron Hruska at the Postural Restoration Institute in Lincoln, Nebraska. It identifies how the body's natural left-right asymmetry (driven partly by the position of the heart, diaphragm, and liver) can become a source of chronic musculoskeletal pain when breathing mechanics are compromised. The treatment uses specific exercises, positions, and breathing cues to retrain the neuromuscular patterns that are creating the tension.
Unlike standard postural correction (which focuses on getting someone to "stand up straight") Postural Restoration works with the whole respiratory and neuromuscular system. Patients with chronic low back pain, hip impingement, SI joint dysfunction, neck tension, and shoulder pain often find that PRI-based treatment produces lasting recovery where other approaches did not. PRI principles are integrated into most of the cases at this clinic, and used as the primary framework for patients who fit the pattern.
Why it works here
The diaphragm first. Everything else builds from there.
Treatment starts with the breath and the rib cage, not the symptomatic area. When the diaphragm is working asymmetrically, the musculoskeletal system compensates around it. Correcting that pattern is the first step.
PRI repositioning exercises are always paired with hands-on manual work. The same clinician conducts every session.
Questions
-
What conditions does it treat?
Postural Restoration is most effective for chronic pain patterns that haven't resolved with standard PT. Common presentations: low back pain with hip rotation asymmetry, SI joint pain, hip impingement, neck and shoulder tension driven by breathing mechanics, and rib cage dysfunction. It's also useful for athletes whose performance is limited by breath and movement asymmetries.
-
How is it different from regular posture correction?
Conventional posture advice (stand straight, pull shoulders back) treats the symptom, not the cause. Postural Restoration looks at why the body holds the position it holds, which usually traces to asymmetrical breathing mechanics and neuromuscular patterning. The treatment uses specific breathing positions and cues to retrain the pattern rather than just coaching patients into a posture they can't sustain.
-
Will it be part of every session, or is it a separate program?
At Cha PT, PRI principles are integrated into the manual therapy work rather than treated as a separate program. If PRI is the primary framework for your case, the sessions will be structured around that. If you're being treated for something else, PRI-informed assessment guides the approach without being the dominant element.
-
How long does it take to see results?
Most patients notice a change within 2 to 4 sessions, usually in how their body feels at rest and in basic movement. Full resolution of a chronic pattern typically takes 8 to 12 sessions, depending on how long the pattern has been established and whether structural factors are also present.
